Do you need good credit to get a foreclosed home? My friend he said he got a house it was foreclosed ?

My friend got a foreclosedm home he said didnt need a down payment, has bad credit and only needed the first months payment for morgage which was $550? Is that true I have wanted a house so long and I really want to know how to get a foreclosed home?
